After returning to Guyana with more than 20 years of entrepreneurial experience, Mr. Roy Beepat opened a small stationery and office supply business with less than 250 square feet of retail space and five (5) employees. Mr. Beepat soon merged his small stationery business with a small gift shop which was owned by his wife Mrs. Monica Beepat, to form Giftland OfficeMax. The new joint venture operated in a small 500 square feet store and employed 10 persons.
Giftland OfficeMax started operating from a location in the shopping center in Georgetown and added several Departments over the years. Space restrictions began to affect sales growth adversely in 2007. Necessitating further expansion within the location, combined with improved policies, purchasing, staffing, and ingenious space utilization, facilitated further growth in sales.
Giftland OfficeMax established its first subsidiary, MCG Investment Inc., a private company tasked with finding a new platform for Giftland's expanding business. In early 2009, MCG Investment Inc. began constructing the largest shopping complex in Guyana's history. Due to limited utility capacity in Guyana, the Mall's construction included a state-of-the-art 6.6MW power generation facility.
Giftland OfficeMax established it's first subsidiary 'MCG Investment Inc.' (referred to Giftland Mall) which was a private company tasked with finding a new platform for Giftland's expanded business. After much search, it was soon realized that no such platform existed to match Giftland's capacity and so the Giftland Mall was born.
The Giftland Mall opened its doors, with Giftland OfficeMax being the main attraction and three other concessions. The Mall's success was questioned as this was the first time a shopping Mall was commissioned in Guyana. Giftland Mall soon became the hub of shopping in Guyana, recording 13 million Mall visits from July 3rd, 2015, to December, 2019. With Guyana's population being 700,000, this reflects a high degree of customer retention.
At this point, the Giftland Mall featured over 120 concessions, including the largest Sports, Electronics, Stationery & Office Supplies stores in Guyana and the Caribbean. Other concessions included 8 Multiplex Theaters, Video Arcades, Beauty Salons, Health & Nutrition Stores, Barber Shops, a Jewelry Store, ATMs and many more amenities, inducing a new supermarket soon to be established.
The Giftland Group further expanded its reach by opening one of the largest supermarkets in Guyana, FoodMaxx Supermarket and the FoodMaxx Cambio, in 2019. The Giftland department store also grew exponentially, with 68,000 square feet stocking over 70,000 lines of product.
With innovation from Mr. & Mrs. Beepat, each department grew, solidifying Giftland Department Store as the largest Department store in the Caribbean.
The Giftland Mall (MCG Investment Inc.) became a licensed private power producer and was contracted by the state-owned power company to supply up to 5MW of power to the national grid. The Mall's power plant provides a significant competitive advantage due to reduced costs compared to diesel generators or power from the national grid. The Mall requires only 2MW of power; therefore, it has sufficient redundancy in case of any failures.
The management of the Giftland Group recognized the importance of charitable contributions and the benefits of socio-economic contributions to society. As a responsible organization, Giftland tried its best to make regular donations to orphanages, villages/communities, hospitals, adult home care facilities and more. Because of this crucial role.
the Giftland Group of Companies introduced its newest member, "The Giftland Charity Foundation", a non-profit organization set to impact thousands of lives in Guyana.
